My portrait of Merran Esson has been selected in this year’s Salon des Refuses exhibition at the S.H. Ervin Gallery.
Exhibition runs Saturday Sep 28 – Sunday November 29.
Recently retiring as Head of Ceramics at National Art School, Merran is one of Australia’s most respected ceramicists, working, exhibiting and teaching for over 40 years. After starting work on this portrait Merran told me she’d been diagnosed with a brain tumour. As I continued painting her I thought about her life and work and what emotions she must have been feeling as I tried to capture the Merran Essson essence. The chair represents her green ceramic Monaro trees and the blue scarf the skies reflective of her rural childhood.
