‘ Moving House’ acrylic on canvas 152 x 152cm A woman holding up the house, wanting to escape. Set in a warm empty lounge room, no windows, a red chair, not just a room but a state of mind, this woman’s life is heavy with unspoken rules and tacit duties, holding it together, juggling a job, caring for children and ageing parents, domestic duties, with a deep-seated bias that ‘women’s work’ is menial, trivial, undesirable and of little consequence. Time lost, unappreciated, disrespected, unpaid. Determination, resilience and self-respect, a house within her grasp, set upon her shoulders. The suitcase signifies she is carrying her past as she moves forward or moves out.
